This reading from Romans is hard for us to properly understand in our post-Reformation age, because we can only read it in light of the debate between Martin Luther and the Catholic Church. So forget, for a moment, the faith versus works debate, and let’s start from the beginning.
Question Number One: What is the source of salvation? Answer: Jesus Christ and his passion, death, and resurrection.
This is why Saint Paul is so insistent that faith is the most important thing and must come first. Without acknowledging Jesus Christ as Lord, there is no salvation and nothing else matters.
Question Number Two: How do we participate in this salvation? Answer: Through union with Jesus Christ, by choosing him above all things.
Uniting ourselves to Jesus consists in far more than intellectually acknowledging that Jesus is Lord. We have to live that choice. When we choose Jesus above all things, we have to live like Jesus, to love like Jesus, and to follow God obediently as Jesus did. This includes following the law of God. These concrete actions are what are normally referred to as “works”. There is no conflict here: faith without works is dead, and works without faith are meaningless.
Faith and works are simply two sides of the same decision to choose Jesus.

Esta lectura de Romanos nos resulta difícil de entender correctamente en nuestra era posterior a la Reforma, porque sólo podemos leerla a la luz del debate entre Martín Lutero y la iglesia católica. Así que olvidad, por un momento, el debate de la fe versus los trabajos, y empecemos desde el principio.
Pregunta número uno: ¿Cuál es la fuente de la salvación? Respuesta: Jesucristo y su pasión, muerte y resurrección.

Unirnos a Jesús consiste en mucho más que reconocer intelectualmente que Jesús es el Señor. Tenemos que vivir esa elección. Cuando elegimos a Jesús por encima de todas las cosas, tenemos que vivir como Jesús, amar como Jesús, y seguir a Dios obedientemente como Jesús lo hizo. Esto incluye seguir la ley de Dios. Estas acciones concretas son las que normalmente se denominan “obras”. Aquí no hay conflicto: la fe sin obras está muerta, y las obras sin fe carecen de sentido.
La fe y las obras son simplemente dos lados de la misma decisión para elegir a Jesús.
