During the Protestant Reformation, one essential debate was on the role of faith in salvation. Luther and his Protestant followers argued that salvation was by faith alone, which is to say that one’s adherence to the truth of Jesus as savior was all that was required to be saved. Catholics agreed with their Protestant brothers and sisters that faith comes first, and is a foundational necessity, but they further contended that faith is meaningless unless it is expressed in action. That is to say, it is essential to adhere to the idea that Jesus is our savior, but we cannot simply believe that, we must also choose to act accordingly.

As Catholics, we believe that we have the Lord on our side. This is what Jesus means when he says in the Gospel that “Not everyone who says to be, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the Kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father in heaven.”

  1. Faith alone compared to faith and works — its the contrast between selfishness and selflessness. I appreciate catholic music with direct link to words of scripture. The singing thereof is truly sung “prayer”.
A song from today’s Gospel is “The Wind Song” by Joe Wise. You can find on You Tube.
Thank you for your daily post. It’s an additional gift to your weekly reflections.
