If you ask me, the Lord’s command to “stay awake” sounds exhausting. It is like he wants me to be anxious and on edge at every moment of every day. What a joyless, difficult existence!

Thankfully, there is a much easier way to “stay awake” and that is to develop virtues. Virtues are simply good habits, and if we practice them long enough, with a concentrated effort, eventually they become easy and automatic. If we become virtuous people, we do not have to be anxious all the time, because we will naturally stay away, in preparation for the Lord’s coming, without even having to think about it. We will not be anxious, we will be automatic and free.

No estaremos ansiosos, seremos automáticos y libres.
